Big Brothers Big Sisters is all about providing positive role models for children in our community! Enrollment is completely free, but the benefit to the lives of Bigs and Littles in our program is beyond value!

Youth are accepted to our program as long as they meet age criteria and exhibit a need for our services. Volunteer requirements are listed below.

This is our community-based program where volunteers are over 18 and commit to seeing a child once per week for a calendar year, engaging in activities of shared interest. Activities can range from attending sporting events and concerts to simply cooking out and sharing a movie at the home of the volunteer. Little Brothers and Sisters are primarily from single parent homes or show a need for an additional caring adult in their life. Volunteers are welcome to continue their commitment to the match for more than the one-year commitment. This type of match has lasted for 14 years before in our agency!

Client Eligibility – all criteria must be met:

- Be between the ages of 5 and 14 years of age

- Live in the service area of BBBSSOGA

- Be from a family that lacks the involved and supportive participation of two parents

- Have needs that are appropriate for volunteer intervention in one or more of the following areas: Academics/Social/Cultural/Emotional-Behavioral

- Evidence of desire for participation in the program

- Custodial parent/guardian consent and support

In this program volunteer mentors agree to have weekly contact for one year with their Little. The weekly contact is to average 2 to 4 hours in length and will be activities in the community. Examples are: going to the library to work on a school project, going to a ball game, going to a concert, fishing, having a cookout or doing a community service project. The interests of the child and the volunteer are considered. Volunteers are thoroughly screened and the parent/child are also interviewed. Home visits occur for all parties. Parents approve all matches and their activities. All matches are supervised and supported by BBBSSOGA staff.
