Buddies-in-school Program This program is school-based for volunteers ages 16 and over who visit a student once per week during the school year. Contact is strictly limited to the Little Buddy’s school. “Buddy Boxes” are placed at the school so that volunteers and their Little Buddy, can visit 30 minutes to an hour, and engage in activities such as playing a game, creating a craft, throwing a football, reading, or eating lunch. Buddy volunteers are to be encouragers and to establish a friendship with their student to foster good attendance, academics, attitude and to increase self confidence. Students are referred from school professionals as having demonstrated a need for improvement in one or more of those four areas. Volunteers are encouraged to continue with their student for as many years as possible with the ultimate goal of high school graduation.
Client Eligibility – all criteria must be met:
- Be in grades K to age 15 in participating schools
- Demonstrate the need for improvement in one or more of four areas: Attendance/Academics/Attitude/Self-Confidence
- Evidence of desire for participation in the program
- Custodial parent/guardian consent and support
In this program, the students must also have referral from the school counselor. Big Buddies agree to have weekly contact for one school year. All contact between the volunteer and child is at the school ONLY. Volunteers are not tutors but are encouraged to do whatever they can to help the Little Buddy be happy and successful at school. Volunteers are thoroughly screened and matches are supervised and supported by BBBSSOGA staff.
